According to Dr. Ray Oldenburg (of the University of West Florida in Pensacola), there are three places where we go: work, home, and the third place is where you get your identity. It’s where you find your belonging, and develop relationships and friendships. In the early 1900s, most lived in a city, and all three places were found within a 2 block radius. Post-WWII the building of suburbs boomed and people moved which caused them to lose this third place.
