Description

In this thought provoking and enlightening second half of our interview with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, we discuss the unique relationship challenges that accompany raising special needs children. We discuss how desire to connect in relationships can only flourish when we are secure in our identity and understand who we want to be and what is meaningful for us in relationships.

Desire is so connected to belonging to your sense of self. When we are losing ourselves for the benefit of our children and relationships but thinking we are being selfless and self sacrificing in caring for others, we are not honoring our desires, therefore diminishing who we are which translates to diminishing who we are to our children, in our marriage, and all relationships.

We also discuss the importance of finding pleasure. There is virtue in pleasure. Pleasure sustains you and allows you to endure the difficulty. When seeking ways to stay connected in marriage or re-connect, we can ask ourselves, “Is there a way for me to be in relationship to myself and my partner in a way that is rejuvenating?”

When we are feeling out of control or like engaging in indulgent negative emotion, we can ask ourselves “who do I want to be in this moment?” This will allow us to gain perspective and show up in love, for ourself and others.
