Our brains like to offer us that regret is useful. Or responsible. I promise you it’s not.

What’s important to understand about regret is that you’re dragging the past into the present. You’re feeling regret right now because of thoughts you’re thinking right now, not because of what happened in the past.

When you think about it logically, it’s not actually important or useful to be using your brain energy in thinking about the past, which you can’t change now. But what you can change now is what you choose to think about, feel, and do right now to create a better life for yourself and your loved ones.

So the best way to not feel regret is to clean up your thinking so that you don’t take actions that would potentially cause regret. And when you do something that might cause your brain to bring up shame or regret, you can feel compassion for yourself. Remember you’re human and remember that everything you do is exactly what you were supposed to do. You can always learn and grow and be better.
