I learned this the hard way years ago. There was a violent civil unrest in my home country, Indonesia, when I was 16. Because of all the rioting, pillaging, and raping that was going on there at the time, I decided to move to the US and leave the whole thing behind.
It was a very difficult decision to make, especially for my parents.
Even though I was old enough to deal with it, I still felt totally out of place, and a bit weirded out when I came here.
I was not just learning to be good at a different language and culture, I also felt like I suddenly needed to take command of my life and be ‘on it’ all the time—something that I didn’t always feel like doing as a skinny and shy teenager.
Plus, I didn’t even know where to start!
And to be honest, I didn’t actually want to learn all these new things. I felt like I would’ve lost everything if I did. It was easier for me to be who I’ve always been and not bother with learning things that made me uncomfortable."
