Our goal is to make sure our conversations connect with as many people as possible. With that said we will be launching a LinkedIn podcast series entitled, Bigger Than You Think. Stay tuned and share with a friend.

On this special episode, we chat with father and firefighter, Kamal Phillips. Driven to serve, he runs towards danger in order to protect his community. Simply put, Kamal cares.

Roll Call: Knight, Russ, Ali

Guests: Lt. Kamal Phillips

One of our modern day superheroes, Kamal is a first responder, firefighter, and father. The Virginia Beach finds time to join the conversation centered on fatherhood and how his parents molded him into the man who fulfills the titles referenced above.

Kamal  shares the beauty in the differences between fathering his son and his daughter. [3:57]

Is it hard being a disciplined parent? [7:08]

Do fathers have to be more intense with their sons? Does race influence how they father? [9:56]

Is there a difference in the American experience based on your color? [15:05]

Discipline by parents may create a false sense of feeling unloved for children. Embrace kids after discipline, love on them, and with time, they’ll know and see the discipline was rooted in how much you truly loved them from the start.

QUOTES

I am weak when it comes to my daughter. I give in easily. I think it’s part of me trying to mold her mentally that I will do for you and bend for you, and I am always on your side. [8:15]

My son will be brilliant. Every man finds his way, and the lessons along the way, the things that he heard repetitively will always be there and become handy. [13:52]

We have to be prepared for the road, as opposed to many of my friends in the majority, the road was prepared for them. [14:47]
