Jesus calls out the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy and sin, Particularly their lack of an interior life... life revolving around God. St. Augustine defines sin as incurvatus in se—that means “caved in around oneself.” To be in sin is to be “caved in” around the ego and its narrow concerns. This is their ailment.
