This week’s Gospel lesson includes two stories. The first (v. 1-15) recounts the feeding of the five thousand. The second, (v. 16-21) tells of Jesus walking on water. Both the miraculous feeding of bread from heaven and the miraculous crossing of the sea are reminiscent of the Exodus, where God fed the people manna and allowed them to escape from the Egyptian soldiers by passing through the waters of the Red Sea.
