Back in the territory days of the NWA, each individual territory would honor the NWA Heavyweight Champion as the top champion in the country but would also establish a championship that would be the top prize for that particular promotion. In 1975, Jim Crockett Promotions and the Mid-Atlantic territory established what would become the top prize in their promotion: The United States Heavyweight Championship. And that championship has stood the test of time as it is the only championship to survive the demise of WCW and still be battled over to this day.
