Jesus has just cast a demon out of a man that was mute. The people begin to demand a sign from Him. He said to them that the only sign they shall be given is the sign of the Prophet Jonah.
Luke 11:30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
Jonah became a sign to Nineveh, just as Jesus would be a sign to this generation. After three days and nights of being in the belly of a great fish, Jonah emerged alive and left the tomb of the fish’s belly.
Of all the things He could have said or did, this is the sign that Jesus promised. The sign of Jonah. To His hearers, they would all know the exact story and prophet He spoke of. They would know that Jonah was in a fish for three days and nights. Jesus Himself is THE sign, both to His generation and to ours; we are to believe in Him, not a sign or looking for a sign. He supersedes any other sign. He is the culmination of all we could ever hope! We need not look for any other sign or one to come. It has all been fulfilled in Him and by Him.
