Think of something valuable that you lost. Car keys, driver’s licence, wallet/purse, wedding ring?
When you find something that you lost, it brings a huge exhale!
Think of a time when you were lost. How did you feel? Being lost can be a bit fun at first, but if you are lost in a bad part of town, it can be very dangerous.
I think almost all of us, if we’ve lived long enough, have been lost at a time or another. Maybe on holiday or a new city, we’ve taken the proverbial ‘wrong turn’ and found ourselves lost. We’ve even been lost with a Sat Nav and map. If you have ever been lost, there is great comfort if you know that someone is looking for you.
We are looking at the story of the lost coin in Luke 15:8-10
Jesus is addressing the various religious leaders here because they are offended and outraged that He is eating and socialising with ‘known sinners.’ He tells a series of parables with similar points: lost, found, and rejoicing. The first parable is about one sheep in 100 that goes missing. Here Jesus tells another parable about a lost coin. The religious leaders were not at all interested in the lost. They couldn’t be bothered with lost people. If we are not careful, we can also lose our regard for the lost.
