What companies' purchasing managers think is a good measure of how the economy is doing. They have to think ahead about all the inputs needed to do business and their experience of business activities, purchase prices, new sales and the outlook for the next six months says a lot about economic prospects. ABSA and the Bureau of Economic Research's Purchasing Managers' Index increased in December and ended the year just above the 50-point mark.
