Jo kitchen is an abstract painter that pushes the conventions of traditional painting techniques. Her process evolves around being fascinated by a concept and exploring that creatively. For example she recently created a series of work that focused on a chair inspired by Patti Smith’s writings, from this she created a whole series that was then published into a book. Jo works in bright colours, but she doesn’t plan or have rules to her process, she goes with instinct and what feels right. Jo studied sculpture at CSM, but like many artist post graduating didn’t have the space or money to continue this practice. This is when she started to bring her sculptural background into 2D works and as a result she found her style and work. Jo creates abstract works but they are beyond the image that she is creating and they are also about the textures of the surface and colours. Anna and Jo also discuss the financial restraints of the art world for early career artists. Follow Jo on Instagram and stay tuned on The Artists Contemporary for an exciting group project that Jo is taking part in.
