I’m episode 19 Anna is joined by Glasgow based painter Sophie Vallance Cantor. Sophie work sits between reality and fantasy, and she uses her own cats as a motif to represent this. Sophie collects inspiration from films, social media and writing to create the bases of her paintings. When working she will then push these motifs into their own world through her bright and colourful palette to the style of her forms. She will often see that through her inspiration of her own cats, when represented in her paintings she has now formed her own breed, that sits somewhere between domestic and wild. Yet exists only in Sophie’s paintings. Anna and Sophie discus the realities of being an early career stage artist, through finding a work routine, social media and being confident in what you are doing, but also the financial reality of having a part time job and the expense of art materials. Sophie believes that the support of her husband Douglas Cantor who is also a widely exhibited artist is the reason she has been able to continue with her own practice through his support and dedication. Sophie is also currently exhibited in Bowes - Parris’ latest instalment of the Back to Back series alongside Lily German. This exhibition is curated by Anna Woodward and Cassandra Bowes and and is a available to view in the Bowes- Parris Gallery website. Thank you so much for listening !
