What’s goin on’ 🌎! Welcome to episode 28 of the Podcast, which is < 150 listens away from a milestone 1k!! I cannot say enough thanks, and will continue to patiently work towards the next milestone. On today’s episode, we have Phillip “Philly Phill” Davis, a true renaissance man of music. From producing music, to playing a wide range of instruments from Jazz Sax to Guitar, he does it all. Above all however, he is a genuine soul which made this 40 minutes fly by. We first met in Drew Hall wayy back, and since I’ve followed Davis’s musical journey. Though mostly on Instagram, I’ve caught a few live performances and the talent and passion for music shine through. Growing up, Davis was in a very music oriented family. His father even told him that he would possess all of his guitar knowledge by the time he was 13. Surprisingly, he plays the majority of his music by ear as opposed to reading sheet music. The definition of an old soul, apart from a few commercial heavyweights, he had not heard a “new age” artist until he was in high school. The 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s were the building blocks for his musical knowledge. You can hear these influences in his production and samples, though he is also relatively new to sampling. Already a massive music fan, producing gave him new appreciation for the songs behind the songs. He talks me through his process and points to some of his greatest producing inspirations being The Neptunes, Timbaland, Michael Jackson and many more. Davis has brought his talents to Howard, something that he has been looking forward to for a while. With just under a year and a half left at the school, he has already made quite the impact. Alongside his friend Khalil, the two run a page for Howard musical creatives. The page @Howardmusiq is focused on garnering exposure for other artists and creatives. From freestyle fridays, to featuring classical piano renditions, the page highlights the diverse range of talent at Howard. In the future however, Davis plans to provide education on the business side of the music industry, as well becoming a formal club. Follow the page on Instagram @HowardMusiq Recorded 1.29.21.
