Description

What’s goin’ on ! Welcome to episode 33. This episode is dedicated to Terrence Clarke, an incredible human being taken from us to soon. Long live TC5 💙 On today’s episode, we have the great Jalynne Brown. Jalynne is a soon to be Senior Biology /Bioethics double major w minor in Chemistry. She is from a small, rural area in Tampa, Florida. Always surrounded by family, she lived just doors down from aunts, uncles and grandparents. Growing up, Jalynne took ballet and piano, as well as pursued academic opportunities whenever they came. When I asked her about the college process, she recalled how she told her Grandmother that she was Harvard-bound at only 3 years old. Her final 3 schools were Stetson, Howard and Clark Atlanta. After a lackluster visit at Stetson, she ventured to Howard where she discovered her home away from home. From there the decision was easy for Brown, even despite the distance. Going to school in a busy city like the nation’s capital was the biggest adjustment for Jalynne. Taking public transportation and adjusting to the overall pace of D.C. were challenging at first, she admits. During our action-packed Freshman year, Jalynne competed in not 1, but 2 pageants on campus. She was practicing everyday, multiple times into the early hours of the morning. Her hard work paid dividends and she credits the experiences for newfound confidence. Around the time of her second pageant, Brown applied for the Summer Health Professions Education Program. This program provided a plethora of opportunities for Brown, both in the academic realm of medicine and in her personal endeavors. Although she greatly enjoyed her time in California, she experienced 2 earthquakes in the short time that she was there. We spoke at length about how Covid-19 uprooted millions of students and has changed the way that we learn. Howard is still unsure of if we will be on-campus, online, or maintain a hybrid format in the Fall, but regardless it’ll be Brown’s Senior year. Before embarking on Medical school, she plans on taking a gap year. Though still undecided on the specifics of her desired medical field, she’s excited to build gain experience and take a step back from school. Recorded 4.27.21
