Paul and
Glenn are back for another entertaining episode. This week we will discuss some
sportspeople and teams from over the years who have been remembered for
cheating and breaking the rules of their sport for illegitimate gains. Some of
what will be discussed include:
- Why some sportspeople cheat e.g.,
psychological factors, external pressures, desire to win.
- A former Soviet Modern Pentathlete
who is often labelled as the biggest cheat in Olympic history after
deliberately engineering his fencing sword to record false touches.
- A former English cricket great
from long ago who apart from scoring a truckload of runs is also known for
betting on games and once refusing to leave the crease after being bowled out.
- Chicago White Sox 1919
- Lance Armstrong, Marion Jones
- NRL salary cap breaches e.g.,
Melbourne Storm
- Sandpaper gate and Deflate gate.
- Chinese swimmers
- Fine Cotton affair in 1984
- Match fixing e.g., Hansie Cronje
- Ancient Olympics e.g., Eupolus and
Nero
- Fred Lorz
- Tony Andre-Hansen
We have
our segments Fair Dinkum and Ratbags of the week as well as Top sportsperson
for the week and those sent to the bench. We also have our Quiz, Sporting
Spotlight and Then and Now. Glenn finishes off with another cracking joke.
