Hey, today I want to talk about what is a backlink in affiliate marketing. Backlinks are when another website links to your webpage. They put a link that directs their visitor to go to your site.

They used to help with seo and getting your webpage found in the search engines. Now, they don't help all that much.

Before Google became the number 1 search engine there was a lot of competition. This was the time when it was all about keyword stuffing.

This determined who got to page 1 on the search engine, so it would be found. As you can guess people were sticking keywords all over the place to try to get to the top spot.

Google was the first search engine to not only look at on page factors like keywords, but also who was linking to that page. This is called off page seo.

This naturally led to people to spamming backlinks to get to the top spot. This was when I got started about 10 years ago, buying a program called Backlink Battleplan.

It was all about building backlinks. Now, Google has come out with many updates like Panda, Penguin and many more. All these updates mean that building backlinks are not nearly as valuable as they once were. Some people still build backlinks, but your time is better spent doing other things.

The only thing Google wants is the best user experience and they look at tons and tons of things, not just backlinks.

Instead of trying to trick the machine, which I don't think is a good idea. I recommend targeting low competition keywords and giving someone the best user experience. That is it.

If you are going to target keywords that are insanely competitive you are not going to get found. It's supply and demand, attention arbitrage.

Just give Google what it wants.  Be as helpful as you can, give the best user experience and naturally people will stick on your webpage, engage with it and you will get high in the search rankings getting more views. One more thing, make sure your keywords are as targeted as you can be. Whoever your target market is you want to be highly targeted to them.

How do you find these keywords to target? I recommend going to Quora and searching your niche and see what questions people are asking. You could also go to forums in your niche.

Also if you type your keyword into Google at the bottom of the page it says related searches and it gives you more ideas.

Another point I have to make is don't just rely on Google for traffic. You can use many sources like podcasting, articles, Quora, Soundcloud for podcasting, Ebooks, TikTok anywhere you can communicate with someone can be a traffic source naturally.

Basically I'll take one piece of content and promote it to places where it can be found like Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Linkedin and others. I'm not doing it for the backlink or the seo, I'm doing it for the traffic.

You might be wondering how this relates to affiliate marketing. Well, affiliate marketing is promoting various products online. You don't want to promote products on a webpage. It's much better to get people to an optin page where they join a list. Then you send messages to the list promoting various products.

The reason this is the best way is because nearly everyone doesn't purchase the first time they see something. When they are on your list you can sale more products to them.

Search engines help your articles, posts or videos get found and when it is found you lead people to an optin page where they can join your list.
