Before Sondheim, Tim Burton, or Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd lived in the pages of the “penny dreadful” stories. These serialized works were the pulp fiction of the mid 1800s and featured the infamous barber of Fleet Street “Easy shaving for a penny, as good as you will find any.”
