THE WORST INJURY THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME
WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGE!!
Saturday morning
Our annual home wrestling tournament
The night prior we spent hours setting up the Matts
I had been practicing all week really focusing on getting my take downs perfected
I finally had a small break through in practice
I was fired up and ready to go for my home crowd
First match
Buzzer sounds
We’re off
He shoots I sprawl
I stand up from bottom
One point on the board for me
1:0 me
He grabs my ankle
I turn my body one way, he turns it the other way
Next thing I know I’m seeing my ankle in a 180 and not moving back
I thought I was dreaming
Immediately rushed to the hospital
My coach said I would get a hot nurse at least, and I believed him in my delusional state of mind
Get to the ER and they turn it back into the position it was supposed to be
Now I’m rushed to surgery to get a medal rod in ankle since my fibula was completely snapped
I cried, I laughed, I was shocked, I felt every emotion under the sun
Knowing that this would be my last chance at wrestling competitively made a rush of tears come to my eyes and I talked to my teammates on the phone
Now 4 months in a cast, crutches, going around a highschool with two floors
Showering sitting down
Relying on others
I hated it
I decided as soon as I first got on crutches
I’m gonna blow the fuck up when I can get back in the gym
I was in the gym with my boot and crutches as soon as I was cleared
I did a program called squat every day as soon as I was clear to put wieght on my feet
I squatted 315 for the first time in my life 3 months later
I’ve squatted 410lbs in my life and deadlifted 515lbs
I’ve ran a half marathon, I’ve ran a half Ironman, I played rugby for 3 years after that
You CANNOT let your current circumstances dictate who the fuck you can become
You CAN decide right now that you will be the best version of yourself starting right now
You can CHOOSE to make this obstacle your going through, to inspire those around you that it’s fucking possible.
