What does Marrying Down mean?

A person whose education level and income does not match or surpass that of their spouse.

A few years ago, an American study was conducted from data collected comparing the percentage of women who marry down and those who marry up. The study showed that in the 90s, about 26% of women married down while 37% married up, however when compared to 2010 the numbers showed a remarkable difference. 35 % of women married down while only 27% married up.

For men in the 1990s, 38% married down and only 25% married up. In the 2000’s, 35% married up and 28% married down.

In another study in 2019, researchers analyzed data matching single women’s assumed desired qualities in a spouse against actual available men. The study concluded that older women have an especially hard time finding an acceptable mate – especially African American women and highly educated women. Even worse, when considering the geographical aspect, the pool of available men in her region were greatly decreased.

One article concluded that if you're a woman holding out for a husband who matches your education level and earns a lot more than you do, you could wind up staying single forever.

The question that I want to answer based on my own perspective is: Is marriage as culturally important as it once was?

2. SECOND POINT: BECOMING THE ONE TO BE ONE

A. Marriage should be a multiplication tool

i. This is how the two become one.

ii. God never intended for marriage to be taken as addition but multiplication. 1 x 1 =

iii. Genesis 1:28 is proof of this revelation because the scripture reads, “then God blessed them and said, ‘be fruitful and multiply.’”

iv. God intended for marriage to be a multiplication tool.

v. Two whole individuals are vital ingredients to the formula for marriage and you will not be whole without knowing who you are.
