Academy Award winning filmmaker Domee Shi is the writer and director of the Pixar film "Turning Red", inspired by Shi's own upbringing of the awkward years coming into adolescence. Shi shares when she realized her personal childhood was worthy of being shared on the big screen, the challenges she faced in pitching a culturally specific and authentic story to the studio, and the importance of highlighting a mother-daughter relationship during this difficult part of a young person's life.
Additionally, as the creative vice president of Pixar Animation Studios, Shi shares her hopes for audiences coming back to theaters after seeing a slew of Pixar's recent titles go straight to the Disney+ streaming service.
Shi received an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her 2018 film "Bao". She has now received her second Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature for "Turning Red".
