Divorce is one of those very sensitive topics that the Church has an obligation to address. However, we almost never hear the Church's teaching on divorce.
Why is that?
I believe it's because divorce has been so normalized in the culture that Church leaders are afraid to touch it. This often leads to confusion and ambiguity on a very clear teaching as well as a neglect toward the children who suffer the trauma of their parents' divorce.
Divorce today is viewed as a breaking of a contract. It's viewed as two adults voluntarily making a decision that's best for them. It leaves the kids confused, hurt, and in a broken home.
I recently went on a retreat with Life Giving Wounds that focuses on healing for adult children of divorce. This episode is a summary of the Church's teaching on divorce as well as some reflection on my take aways from that retreat.
