Episode 218 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’re back with some basketball action discussing Connie Hawkins.
A powerful, above the rim & high-flying Forward, Hawkins was making highlight reel plays years before the likes of Julius Erving & Michael Jordan.
Sadly, Hawkins’ amateur career & chances for a professional one in the NBA were wiped out when he was falsely & baselessly linked to the 1961 NCAA point shaving scandal.
After a stint with the Harlem Globetrotters, Hawkins proved his dominance in the ABA with the Pittsburgh Pipers. In Pittsburgh, he led his team to the first ABA Championship & won an ABA MVP!
Finally, by 1969 his lawsuit against the NBA was settled and he joined the newly formed Phoenix Suns. Although he started his NBA career much later than anticipated, Hawkins was a 4x All-Star, became one of Phoenix’s first marquee stars & was named to the Naismith Memorial HOF in 1992!
