Episode 251 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we’ve started a new block of episodes on “Big East Men’s Basketball Coaches.” First up, John Thompson.
A native of Washington, D.C., Thompson rose to prominence as a player at Providence & as a backup to Bill Russell on some of the most dominant teams in NBA history in Boston.
It was at Georgetown however where the future Naismith & College Basketball Hall of Famer made his historic mark as a Head Coach. In 1983-1984 he became the first African-American Head Coach to win a major collegiate championship in basketball when Georgetown captured the National Title. Overall, Thompson led the Hoyas to three Final Four appearances during his career & was named Big East C.O.Y. three times as well.
