A lot of people don’t know or remember, but when Jackie Robinson integrated Major League Baseball, he only integrated the National League. Lost to history in a way, future Hall of Famer Larry Doby integrated the American League six weeks later. A left-handed power hitter who patrolled center field at a Gold Glove caliber level, Doby was a key cog during the glory years of the Cleveland Indians during the late 1940s through the mid 1950s, including a 1948 World Series victory. Doby took the same racist vitriol Robinson did and turned the other cheek with class. The first black player to hit a home run in the World Series and All-Star Game, his name should be mentioned in the same breath as Robinson. Moreover, his #14 should be retired throughout the league just like Jackie’s #42.
