PHIL

Hello and a very warm welcome to episode 0374 of Five in the Eye right here on Colourful Radio. This is Phil Woodford in the hot seat, welcoming you back to our weekly news review show. Now, Michael is taking a well-earned rest this week, but the good news is that we have the perfect stand-in. He’s an old friend of the Eye – barrister and communications expert, Kola Sonaike. Hi there, Kola!

KOLA

Hi, Phil. Good to be back on Five in the Eye. And I can reveal our top story this week is – surprise, surprise – going to be the appointment of our new Prime Minister Liz Truss. She has appointed her Cabinet, taken part in her first PMQs session at Westminster and is now under real pressure to deliver relief from the cost-of-living crisis.

PHIL

Story number two this week is a story close to Kola’s heart. Barristers are striking – well, at least those who specialise in criminal law – because they want more money. And this means our court system is grinding to a halt. Are they justified in taking industrial action?

KOLA

For story number three, we head to the Netherlands, where a town has banned the advertising of meat! Something to get our teeth into later.

PHIL

And what’s story number four? Well, Serena Williams has finally hung up her racket, after decades as an iconic figure in tennis. What will her legacy be?

KOLA

And finally, to wrap up the show, there’s an app that can apparently translate the miaows of your pet cat!

PHIL

I don’t need an app to know what my little Martha is saying to me! And that’s this week’s Five in the Eye!
