MICHAEL
Hello and a very warm welcome to Five in the Eye, right here on Colourful Radio. This is me - Michael Ohajuru - back from a trip to sunny Cyprus and sliding into the hot seat for today’s show, which is number 0381. Thanks so much to Lorraine and Themba for keeping Phil company over the past couple of weeks!
PHIL
And this is Phil Woodford - joining Michael via Zoom this week - and revealing that we have another special guest on the show. It’s his first time on the show, so I’ll know you’ll give an extra warm welcome. It’s Jason Page. Hi there, Jason!
JASON
Hi, Phil, hello Michael. It’s good to be here on Five in the Eye. So what’s our first story going to be this week? Well, it’s the arrival of Rishi Sunak and his new Cabinet. What does his government tell us about class, race and power in the UK today?
MICHAEL
For our second story, we head over to China, where former Chinese premier Hu Jintao was bustled off the stage at an important party congress, where he was sitting next to the current leader Xi Jinping. Was this a classic power play in a totalitarian regime? And where is China headed now that that Xi can apparently stay at the top for as long as he likes?
PHIL
Our third story this week is closer to home. Jason was present recently in Liverpool when Dr Julius Garvey visited. He’s the son of Marcus Garvey, the activist who championed pan-Africanism and whose ideas influenced the Black Power Movement and Nation of Islam. Jason will report on events.
MICHAEL
What’s story number four this week? Well, apparently we need to be prepared for power blackouts this winter. And everyone needs a special box handy!
JASON
And finally, to wrap up the show, a grandson and grandmother in America are on an adventure together. Their mission is to visit all 63 of the country’s national parks!
PHIL
Michael, you’re being left behind here! And that’s this week’s Five in the Eye!
