The Air Defence Missile Systems that the Indian Air Force (IAF) mans are critical to the security of the nation. An Air Defence System consists of various components that detect an airborne intrusion, analyse and confirm its being an enemy threat, track it in its flight and orders one or more of the Air Defence resources to neutralise it.
There are a variety of both missile systems for both point and area defence. These have varied ranges and provide a multi-layered system that can contest the enemy at various ranges.
Our neighbours also have multiple-Air Defence Systems. We are in the process of procuring the latest Russian S400 Air Defence Missile System from Russia. Reports indicate the Chinese having deployed such systems in Tibet.
Brig SK Chatterji (Retd) discusses the various facets of Air Defence with Air Cmdre SP Singh. The Air Cmdre is an experienced fighter pilot with over 3000 hours of flying experience. He has an in-depth exposure to the IAF’s Air Defence Systems.
