On this episode, we discuss implicit bias in the school system. We interview special guest, Sigourney Edwards, mother and DC resident, who revealed her journey to find a school for her son that encompassed high educational standards, emotional well-being, and employed role models that looked like him. Sigourney speaks candidly about her and her son's experience as a black child in a predominately white environment. We examine the resource gap between schools and how that disproportionately affects students of color. We explain ways to decrease implicit bias in school by raising self-awareness, acknowledgement, and addressing bias explicitly. In addition, we converse about how implicit bias can impact people within the same culture or community. This is a complex topic and we will have further episodes dedicated to implicit bias.
