Description

Learning about those subjects will help Thomas Nelson history professor Stacey Schneider as she and her sister hike the Virginia portion of the Appalachian Trail. Stacey discusses the topics with fellow Thomas Nelson professors Kimberly Zahn, Lucinda Spryn and Lynsey LeMay.

The back story: My sister Carrie and I are always up for an adventure, and in the midst of the chaos of the last year, we’ve challenged ourselves to simplify our lives and focus on a singular goal – hiking the Virginia section of the Appalachian Trail in October. It is about 550 miles, roughly from Damascus to Front Royal, and we’ll do every step together. We will get as far as we can in 30 days covering about 15 miles a day. Neither of us is an experienced camper, nor a practiced hiker, but we are determined Schneider girls who are looking to conquer something really challenging. On our backs, we’ll carry between 30 to 40 pounds of equipment that we’ll need for the month – hard choices will be made to limit the weight. This physical constraint made me realize I can’t pack many guidebooks or reference information – I need to learn as much as I can before we go. I need the knowledge to be lightweight and portable – my brain is the only option here.
