Description

OBJECTIVES: It is the purpose of this course to familiarize ourselves with foundations of the world’s literature in the modern period, beginning around AD 1700, and ending in the present day. We will briefly examine important pieces from “The Enlightenment of Europe”, “The Ottoman Empire”, the “Vernacular Literature in China”, and “The Twentieth Century”, among others, as literary works of the most influential authors and historical periods of World Literature in the context of historical, social, and cultural perspectives.

OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students are expected to have a broader knowledge of the World’s Literature and will be prepared to express their world view understandings throughout peer group discussions (in class and online) and various types of writings (orally and in written critiques), such as, well developed essays, short essay questions, and character development found in poetry, short stories, novels, and plays.

CONCEPTS: Because it is extremely important that the experience one has reading literature along with some knowledge of the texts’ historical and cultural contexts.
