You don't have to be free of shame and remorse or free of low self-esteem or even self-hatred in order to be proud of yourself. We humans can hold more than one emotion at a time and we usually do. You can work on becoming more of the person you want to be while still processing some of the things in your past or present that make you feel bad about yourself. Both can go on at the same time and they usually do unless you get stuck in the swamp of self-hatred.
