We all have a tendency to compare ourselves to others. We tend to think that if only we were someone else—better looking, better educated, better moneyed—we would be happier. All we really need to do is be “other” than who we truly are. This is the great comparison trap—the great trap of the spiritual life. These comparisons lead us away from the true self, the person that God created us to be; ultimately denying the person God has created and desired for us to truly and fully be. This is a prison of our own making but freedom is within our grasp.
