Description

In this episode we look at how God more adequately "covers" Adam and Eve's nakedness with animal skins, and how that can give us insight into the inadequacy of Adam and Eve's attempts to address their own fear and shame, as well as possible hints of a sacrificial system to come. We then talk about how Christ is like the animal skins in that we can be covered with his new humanity, which was fashioned according to the righteousness and holiness of God.

Genesis 3:20-24 The word for "coverings" in 3:7 is the Hebrew word HAGOR and can be translated as apron, or belt. The word for "tunics" in 3:21 is the Hebrew word KUTONET and can be translated as coat, garment, or robe.

Ephesians 4:17-24 When Paul says to put on the "new man" in 4:24 the word for "man" is the Greek word ANTHROPOS. This "new man" is referenced in 2:15 as being Jesus himself. In both 2:15 and 4:24 it says that this "new man" is "created." The idea here is that Jesus took the corrupted human nature he received from his mother Mary and created a new humanity out of it, one that was completely conformed to, and aligned with, the righteousness and holiness of God. Now, in Christ, we are called to "put on" the new humanity of Christ like a garment, allowing our own corrupted human nature - our mind, desires, conduct - to be conformed to, and aligned with, his new humanity, which brings us into a process of developing our corrupted human nature according to the righteousness and holiness of God, too.
