Description

Protests erupted on our campus yesterday in direct response to sexual assault allegations that surfaced on the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak over the weekend. The allegations spurred a tidal wave of solidarity entangled in outrage and frustration, frustration with a tradition of deference shown to fraternities by universities across the nation.

On the lawn of the UMass Amherst chapter of Theta Chi, demonstrators pushed back against this pattern of impunity and echoed calls for accountability. They erected a flag that read QUOTE There is no place for rapists at UMass, another still that read QUOTE How to prevent rape? One, don’t rape, two, see above.

Demonstrations haven’t abated, but, at their peak, protests attracted crowds of upwards of three hundred students. Our reporters Kate Horgan, Lilyana Ricardo, and Aidan King interviewed protestors Sunday morning. WMUA News Editor Rebeca Pereira has more.
