Kamala Das was also popularly known by her one-time pen name Madhavikutty. besides her married name Kamala Das. She converted to Islam in 1999 and assumed the name Kamala Surayya. Kamala was an Indian poet in English and Malayalam, hailing from Kerala, India. Her open and honest treatment of female sexuality also marked her as an iconoclast in her generation. She in her lifetime has been a widely read columnist too writing about diverse topics from child care to politics. Besides Sahitya Akademi and several other accolades, her work also get shortlisted for Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984.
