As we continue to learn about materialism and its dangers, a true life story of a devout man of God from Tamil Nadu who made a decision never to touch a “Currency Note” with his hands gives us a different perspective of Materialism.
This Man Of God was the Leader of a Big Church and was known by all in His town. Since he did not handle money, he always travelled ticketless in buses. On this particular occasion, he got into a bus which had a new Conductor who did not know him. After repeatedly asking him to pay and not receiving the money for the ticket, the Conductor stopped the bus and threw him out. Then he signalled the driver to get driving, but the bus wouldn’t move. Everybody in the bus yelled at the conductor saying that the man he had pushed out was a Man of God and unless he was called back, the bus wouldn’t move. Hesitantly, the conductor let him in and the next moment the bus moved forward.
In another incident, this great Man Of God waved at a bus to stop but being well- known as the man who travels without a ticket, they didn’t stop for him. When the bus reached 15kms away, they found this man at his destination. He arrived there before them and walked past the bus. . Spiritual transportation happens even today.
The Spirit of the Lord took Philip away from the Ethipoian eunuch and he later appeared at Azotus. (Acts 8:39,40)
This is one extremism. But in the normal case, we all have to handle money daily. In Jesus’ time on Earth, Judas handled the money matters. When Peter had to pay tax, Jesus asked him to go to the sea and cast a hook and pay the two drachma tax (Mathew 17.24-27).
Money is needed for daily living, but people can go to another extreme , by living only for money and its benefits. People labor day and night, work overtime to make more money and have a never ending desire to buy more and more; hunting after money, estates and property.
