Door #13 Materialism

We all live in a material world.

In the book of Genesis we see that God made us with elements of the earth and to live in this world, we need the materials and resources of this earth. Irrespective of our religion, gender, status, we all need these material things to survive!

However, if we prioritize worldly things over spiritual things, that can cause problems. It changes a person’s value system. People’ s attitudes change. A husband without money is like a flower without honey.Many of us tend to give an unnecessary and exaggerated love for money. However we cannot live without money. We don't know where to strike the balance.

What exactly is Materialism?

1. A tendency to consider material and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.
2. According to philosophy, it is the theory or belief that nothing exists except matter and its movement and modifications.

This ideology can be very dangerous.

Looking at the time of Jesus, we see the perfect example He has set. Some people observe that Jesus lived like a monk. However, the bible never promotes Asceticism and Jesus never lived this life either. He led a very normal human life. He had parents, brothers and sisters, lived in a house and worked for a living. He did not live as a hermit, communing with His heavenly life. He had a common and very real life like us.

How do we strike the right balance between the love and need for money?

1. Money is a Shelter

Ecclesiastes 7:12 says “Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.”

We need money to live in this world. It provides us Shelter

2. Money is Power

Proverbs 22:7- “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.”

We see that the people of influence and power are usually the wealthy. They even control Governments. Money is power.

3. Money is the Answer

Ecclesiastes 10:19 says “A feast is made for laughter, wine makes life merry, and money is the answer for everything.”

Money is an answer for many things. Without money, people cannot survive on earth. However there are things that money cannot buy. Bags of gold cannot buy you happiness, sleep, joy, peace etc. Think about 12 things you can achieve with money and 12 things you cannot buy with money! Think about 12 bad things you can do with money and think about 12 good things.

Money has its advantages but always remember to put God first!
