Uncle Pauly, here once again to guest host Dr. Deniz's You Tube Channel on the benefits of incorporating a "Reward/Cheat Meal" into our nutrition plans. Unfortunately, when we engage in a calorie restrictive weight loss plan, we can hit a plateau where the body stops losing weight and/or body composition does not change. From a physiological perspective, the brain goes into, "Emergency/Survival Mode" and a switch is turned on for the body to cease using fat storage for energy. The new source is protein-based which disturbs nitrogen balance and affects hormonal homeostasis which in turn negatively influences glycogen-insulin balance (can lead to insulin resistance).
However, by throwing in a calorie-rich meal, it temporarily "fools" the brain into preceiving that there are sufficient food levels igniting the metabolism. With our metabolism running on high, our hormones are reset, and our glycogen-insulin balance is normalized.
My recommendations include:
1. Add the reward meal once every 1-2 weeks (not set in stone), preferably before noon.
2. Plan what you are going to eat and when you are going to eat it- make sure that there are no negative feelings of guilt associated with this action.
3. Keep a log of your progress (nutrtion, training, cravings, body ache, irritable, sleeping patterns)
4. Resume your normal nutirtion plan the following meal and the rest of the day.
