Hello, this is Dr. Deniz- happy Monday to you all. Hoping that you all had a good workout this morning- I definitely did. Today, I wanted to discuss 3 Pros and Cons of Crossfit. By the way, here is the corresponding You Tube video from this morning:
https://youtu.be/5RsUZZZADKA. Pros:
1. It is based on cross-training which has been shown to have a positive impact on optimizing sports performance. .
2. It also incorporates functional training which challenges balance and coordination. This affects both cardio-vaascular and anaerobic systems resulting in increased energy expenditure.
3. It facilitates group and community formulation, support, and acceptance. This combats isolation which has drastically increased during this pandemic.
Cons.
1. It is often emotion-based versus science-based due to the group dynamics as we, as humans can perform better when we are supported and encouraged by others. When the focus is primarily on the amount of weight being lifted, over time, it leads to transforming normal and healthy patterns of movement to the opposite.
2. Most participants have pre-existing conditions (ex. herniated discs, meniscal tears in the knee, limited flexibility and mobility, limited core activation and stability, varying levels of pain that is chronic or acute). The solution would consist of athletic performance testing prior to starting a program by a specialist like myself to identify dysfunction in required movement patterns.
3. Olympic lifts are extremely technical and there is a learning curve to attain proper form and execution. Unfortunately, we as humans can only run a spirint for seconds which is what is necessary for these lifts- it is an explosion of power coupled with tremendous flexibility, core activation, and coordination. Over time, the ability to repeat what is needed is not possible and from a neurological point of view, when the threshold is exceeded, compensatory strategies are called upon. Compensation leads to a high probability of injuries. This is Dr. Deniz, 'The Wellness Guy" providing hope, encouragement, and specialized education for all to thrive.
