Every decision, whether it was going to graduate school, studying for my doctorate, moving to Norway, all built on each other. These choices narrowed my trajectory, and at the same time opened up a new set of options, which then led me down a different path. I had the opportunity and advantage to select among a lot of different options at each stage of my career. Our decisions are influenced by the options that are available to us at that time. Often we have no control over how many options are available. It depends a lot on our background, where we come from, and where we can imagine going. If you’re someone who has to make a difficult decision, and you find that you have few options or maybe no options at all, talk to someone who has been there before. Try to keep pushing.
