In this episode, I share an interview I did for the 30DaySpeaker.com with Pedro Pena. Pedro is the creator of a successful podcast called, My Stuttering Life. He attained his master's degree in industrial-organizational psychology at the University of Houston Clearlake. He began to stutter after a traumatic dog attack at the age of 5. After 20 years of speech therapy, Pedro has embraced his stutter and no longer lets fear dictate every facet of his life.
Fear is a powerful emotion. For 35 years of Pedro’s life- it controlled everything. Pedro first enrolled in a pre-law major but switched to psychology due to the fear of his stutter. He was isolated from his peers growing up because no one wanted to be around the guy that stuttered. He feared being in social environments and avoided public speaking. Growing up, he suffered from low self-esteem and was often brought down by others. People told him that he wasn’t capable of accomplishing anything in life. This pushed Pedro into a very dark place in his life. He decided that he wanted to end his misery by taking his life.
One night, he grabbed his dad’s gun and walked out of the house. As he was walking down the road, he passed by a homeless man. The man approached Pedro and asked him what he was doing. And so, he told him about his struggles with his stutter. The homeless man explained to Pedro that he was on the earth for a purpose. He needed to find that purpose. At that moment, the darkness went away. That homeless man saved Pedro’s life.
