Released on July 18th 2019, The Banana Splits Movie was directed by Canadian filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy. The screenplay was written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas.
The film is a reimagining of the 1968 children’s tv show The banana splits adventure hour. Although Chopping mall from 1986 and the original child’s play are cited as inspiration for the banana splits movie, notable connections have been made between this movie and the five nights at Freddy’s video game franchise. As a result, The Banana Splits Movie has a small cult following.
Initial reviews were mostly favorable with critics embracing the absurd premise and elements of horror comedy.
Being one of the more contemporary movies on our list, it remains to be seen what legacy, if any, The Banana Splits movie will have in the coming years. But because of its bizarre nature, it seemed worth including for variety if nothing else.
