Released on February 12th 2021, Willy’s Wonderland was directed by Kevin Lewis and written by G. O. Parsons. Willy’s Wonderland was originally scheduled for release on October 30th of 2020, but was postponed due to Covid 19.
Similarities have been drawn between Willy’s Wonderland and The Banana splits movie as well as the five nights at Freddy’s video game franchise. Given the premise of Willy’s wonderland, it’s a safe bet that Five nights at Freddy’s was a large source of inspiration for the film’s plot. That being said, Willy’s Wonderland is a full length adaptation of G. O. Parson’s 2016 short film Wally’s Wonderland which was released just two years after the release of the first five nights at Freddy’s video game.
While this film and The banana splits movie share a similar cult following because of their connections to the popular game franchise, Willy’s wonderland has proven to be exponentially more popular, overshadowing the the banana splits movie despite releasing two years later. The presence of fan favorite actor Nicolas Cage is likely the source of the movie’s success.
