Episode 8 of Season 2! Host, Gratton Conwill and special guest, Matt Fields discuss Onibaba (1964).
Day 8
Onibaba 1h 45m
Onibaba (translated as Demon Hag) is a Japanese historical drama and horror film written and directed by Kaneto Shindô. It was released in Japan on November 21, 1964. In a subversive turn of events, an unedited, subtitled version was released theatrically in the United States less than a year later. In the wake of popular Japanese period films such as Yojimbo, distributors were less inclined to change Japanese drama films for foreign audiences. This makes Onibaba a rare example of a foreign film being brought to the states completely untouched from the time of its release. That being said, Onibaba was edited down for its UK release as the original edit was rejected by UK censors.
Onibaba was based on a Buddhist parable about a woman who scares her daughter in law by wearing a mask and jumping out from behind a bush. In the parable, she is punished by Buddha who makes the mask stick to her face, when she begs for the mask to come off, it finally does but it takes her face with it.
Original reception was mixed, but over time Onibaba has become regarded as a horror classic.
