Coach Josh Merkel is in his 7th season as the head mens basketball coach at Randolph Macon and during last year’s pandemic shortened NCAA Division III season, Coach Merkel led Randolph Macon to a 12-0 record. RMC finished the year with a victory over the #2 ranked team in the country, at the time, Trine University to clinch an undefeated season.
Coach Merkel and Randolph Macon finished No. 1 in the final D3hoops.com national poll from the 2020-2021 season. Coach Merkel was the recipient of the 2021 Glenn Robinson National Division III Coach of the Year Award. He was South Region Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com and was named ODAC Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.
Overall Randolph Macon is 123 - 38 under Coach Merkel.
In today’s interview we discuss Coach Merkel’s experience at his alma mater, Salisbury University as well as what makes Randolph Macon so special. We discuss the final game of last years shortened season versus Trine University, a battle of the top two teams in the country as well as his roster this season and how their experience, last season is paying dividends this year.
