Description

Voice  of the People: Radio by and for the 99% will have a Labor Day theme. Our word of the week is "general strike." We discuss what it is, the history of the general strike, and the prospects for workers to use this tactic in the US. We also continue to cover the pandemic, the economic fallout from it, and the continuing failure of Congress to adequately address it. We also review the Missoula City Council's rejection of a modest "defund the police" proposal. We then take an in depth look into how market monopolies - such as Amazon, Microsoft and Disney - reduce workers' overall share in the economy, both in the reduction of the per cent of profit going to workers' wages and by manipulated prices of their goods and services. Then we look at professional sports unions wildcat striking against police brutality,  next we cover a supermajority strike against General electric in Louisville, KY. Then we look at Amazon's use of security intelligence to spy on organizing movements among their workers. And then we finish the first hour looking at various strikes and job actions taken by educators to ensure they and their students are adequately protected from COVID-19.

In the third half hour we feature an interview with John Andrechak, host of Laborlines on KRFP-FM Radio Free Moscow, Community Radio for NW Idaho and SE Washington, and is now available on podcast. John discusses with us about where the labor movement in the US is and where it needs to go.

Then  for the last half hour we have a great conversation with our sound sound guy Jim Gillan, retired from Boeing in Seattle and his union SPEEA/IFTPE representing engineering, scientific and technical workers, as we continue to talk about unions and the labor movement.
