The word to illuminate means to brighten, irradiate, lighten, or light. With all that is happening in our world, we are to be agents of illumination. As a leader, you have been given the great responsibility not only to achieve results through people but also to brighten your work environment so that your team can flourish and deliver results. I know of people who dread going back to work because the environment is uninspiring and toxic. When they get to work, they can’t wait for the workday to end so that they go back home to their loved ones or to the cat or dog or whatever pet makes their day.
Each one of us can be an agent of illumination. I once worked for a boss who was that agent. He created this environment where we all felt valued, treated with respect and dignity, made us feel like a family on a mission, and as a result we were all inspired to be more, do more, and give more. The results we produced as a cohesive team working harmoniously to achieve our collective mission and vision were phenomenal. Real and authentic leaders are agents of illumination.
