Personhood & Identity
Chris Hefner
Because God created man in his own image, the biblical view of man is distinct and unique.Implications of Two Story Truth
With personhood detached from biology, when a person “becomes human” matters more than when life is conceived
When personhood is detached from biology, sex becomes an act without emotion or intimacy
When personhood is detached from biology, what one thinks about self becomes authoritative, not gender, biology, or DNA
Four Options Regarding the Human Person
Trichotomism: body, soul, and spirit
Dichotomism: body and soul
Monism: human persons are only embodied; no life after physical death.
Conditional Unity: humans are complex beings, but also whole
Takeaways:
Humans may be more than their bodies, but are certainly not less than their bodies
That we are whole persons means that we are to love the Lord with “all” of us
Personhood and identity are the worldview notions that will increasingly distinguish a biblical worldview from the contemporary views
Because our “whole” person is body and soul, we can anticipate a future embodied state
