Doctrine of Atonement
Chris Hefner
Penal means that we are sinful, and that our sins deserve punishment
Substitutionary means that Jesus took our place when he atoned for our sins by taking the punishment we deserve
Why is the doctrine of the atonement necessary?
God is more holy than we imagine
We are more sinful than we think
Jesus loves us more deeply than we deserve
Theological Takeaway: Our salvation is only possible with a substitute
Worship Takeaway: A proper view of the doctrine of the atonement enlarges our view of God and enhances our view of his love
Evangelistic Takeaway: The atonement’s recognition of God’s holiness and wrath in contrast to human sin is the central evangelistic truth of the gospel and what must be shared
Relational Takeaway: Communion, or the fellowship meal with other believers, is a visible symbol of the atonement for us as believers together. It connects us to Christ (union with Christ) and with other believers in the communal aspect of the table. Not only are my sins atoned for, but ours are
